Building a Smart City

Building a Smart City Building a Smart City Building a Smart CityIt was going to be a gleaming ghost town, shimmering amid an arid expanse of southeastern New Mexico. Energy and infrastructure consultant Marble Arch Partners proposed building The Center for Innovation, Testing and Evaluation to do full-scale testing of the smart cities systems and technologies that will define the future of urban development. The ambitious plan called for spending $1 billion to build an uninhabited city large enough for 35,000 people, fitted with intelligent building, transportation, and energy systems. Without human drivers on the road or children playing in the streets, engineers could test new systems without worrying about disrupting everyday life. Drones could hover over autonomously operated vehicles while streetlights watched buses to see if they were running on time.Five years after the announcement, ground still has bedrngnis been broken and the window may be closing. Instead of running tests in the middle of nowhere, cities are installing smart systems at an increasing pace, beginning with pilot projects and expanding them as the results prove out. Using their own infrastructure as a test bed, their results promise to change how cities manage utilities and services while providing citizens with tools to exploit the information they generate.According to a report by Navigant Research, smart cities are a global phenomenon. There are 250 projects underway in 178 cities worldwide, with Europe leading the way because of its aggressive climate change policies. The research firm estimates the global market for smart city technologies and services to be worth $40.1 billion in 2017, with growth expected to reach a whopping $97.9 billion by 2026. Barriers to entry are falling as sensors improve and smart technologies grow more efficient, more capable, more interoperable, and less expensive. In a smart city, wireless motion and flow sensors, low-cost video cameras, temperature and noise monitors, and air quality devices feed data continuously into systems, which use them to control besucherzahlen lights, streetlights, pedestrian displays, power distribution and more. Cities use them to monitor traffic, mass transit, pedestrian flows, and crime. All these devices link with rugged wide area networks that send data to the cloud, where powerful analytic engines the data to make cities efficient and safer. There are so many different technologies, but lighting is one of the big growth areas, said Ryan Citron, a Navigant analyst who co-authored the report. lumineszenzdiode lighting is becoming the go-to replacement technology. There are two key reasons why LEDs have become the foundational technology of smart city networks, Citron said. First, they offer energy savings of up to 80 percent and a fast payback period. Second, each light carries a microprocessor, making it a potential node in a system that is ideal for setting up a wireless wide area network. behauptung networks create a scaffold that supports the buildout of future smart system capabilities.Leveraging DataSan Diego officials are spending $30 million to make their city smarter. The effort, the fruchtwein ambitious in the world, involves replacing 14,000 streetlights with LED lights and 3,200 sensors. Those sensors will gather information on everything from vehicular traffic and pedestrian movement to changes in air quality. The data will enable the city to reroute emergency vehicles around congestion, smooth the flow of the daily commute, and point drivers to vacant parking spaces as they come available.Just as important, San Diegos emerging open-source platform will put raw, anonymous data in the hands of entrepreneurs searching for new opportunities and citizens looking for ways to make city life better, said David Graham, the citys deputy chief operating officer.San Diego has both an educated population and a strong tech startup community, and Graham is actively courting two-wa y interaction with them by sponsoring hackathons using city data. A favorite that has emerged from those sessions will tell food trucks where people are congregating and where they can park.Entrepreneurs could also use the data for more traditional market research, analyzing pedestrian traffic to decide where to locate a new retail store or how much rent to charge for commercial property. The system was developed by GE, which now is deploying it through a spin-off, Current. It retrofits existing lighting infrastructure by installing energy-efficient LED lights that are fitted with sensors, controls, wireless transmitters, and microprocessors.By repurposing light poles, you can transform to a digital infrastructure, said Austin Ashe, general manager of Currents intelligent cities program. This becomes a digital engine that extracts metadata from the environment.Of course, smart hardware needs equally smart software. GE believes that it has a proven system in its Predix software platf orm, which is already used by industry to generate operating data from factory machines and devices. In cities, the networked system extracts very granular data in real time, and retains historical data it can use to predict trends in the movement of people, traffic, or whatever topic city officials identify. It also creates an opportunity to leverage the data with the broader software development community, Ashe said. It allows the broader community to take the data and transform it into an appropriate application. In fact, smart city applications generate more data than most cities can use. The volume of data is intimidating, said Ken Thompson, global technology leader for smart cities and sensors for engineering giant CH2M. It scares a lot of people to death about how to process all of that data, Thompson said.As a result, many industries and cities today use only a small fraction of the data available to them, he said. In one internal survey, Thompson found that water clients proce ss only about 10percent of their data. That is not efficient, though it is driving the development of faster analytics engines that can process large volumes of data more quickly. That data crunching ability is important, Thompson said, but when youre developing the technology, you must have a subject matter expert involved. While IT professionals can develop all sorts of algorithms, it takes a subject matter expertsomeone who understands city traffic or water distributionto make sure they are capturing the information needed to make intelligent decisions.Data-Driven DecisionsGE first approached San Diego when city officials were dealing with the result of years of underinvestment in infrastructure.Looking forward, rather than replace what we had with something that was just a little better, it became a conversation about building an intelligent platform, Graham said. The two parties decided to build a pilot network using 40 streetlights in San Diegos East Village neighborhood. After putting the sensors in the lights, we developed enough information for a parking application, Graham said. The city found there was a value proposition with parking, and that it could use sensors to identify abandoned vehicles and other roadway threats.Just by themselves, the upgrade to LED lights made a lot of sense, Graham said. With 2,000 lights, we found we could save a quarter-million dollars and cut energy use up to 60 percent.Overall, the city expects a 13-year payback period for the entire project.Yet the networked smart lights gave San Diego a new way to provide better and more site-specific neighborhoods services. For example, it could dim lighting around the nearby Palomar Observatory and in areas where people need dark sky, Graham said. At the same time, the city could intensify the lighting elsewhere, depending on pedestrian and vehicular traffic data provided by their sensor.Like GE, Mumbai-based Tata Consultancy Services provides real-time data and predictive models. It claims that its mit anspruch Urban Exchange platforms machine learning technology cuts the payback period for LED lighting almost in half. It uses machine learning to build models that customize the operation of individual streetlights based on such historic data as crime patterns and pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The platform will suggest optimal streetlight brightness and the most cost-effective schedule to save energy.Tata is using the same platform to optimize public transportation in Belfort, a city of 50,000 in eastern France. Belfort operates 100 buses along five bus routes. Tatas system gathers data such as the number of bus tickets sold and bus speed and schauplatz. It is using the data to help Belfort optimize bus schedules to reduce crowding, determine the savings from new road construction projects, and discover ways to reduce costs.Senthil Gunasekara, who heads corporate development and strategy for Tatas Digital Software Solutions Group, said his company develo ped the lighting and transportation applications as part of a staged rollout of smart city applications on a common software platform.Adding new application modules enables cities to phase in the expansion of their smart city capabilities within a single platform. The software acts like a lingua franca, enabling it to access, exchange, and analyze different types of urban data, from streetlights and transportation to water and electrical systems. That is a critical capability because most cities already collect a voluminous amount of information. Much of it comes from sensors and reporting systems that have been in place for years. These range from weather stations and traffic loggers to footfall data and crime videos. The software can integrate this data to help city managers make better day-to-day decisions, and to help them manage emergency response during a crisis. It can take data from any source, analyze it, and present solutions, Gunasekara said. The platform is quite open.Secu ring the NetworkAlthough cities want an open platform, they also want a secure platform to keep hackers from tampering with urban infrastructure, Ashe said. After all, in a system designed to respond automatically to sensor data, every LED light is also a portal into the citys digital control processes. Most systems use proven methods to discourage tampering. Predix, for example, monitors individual devices and applications for signs of intrusion. It encrypts communications between devices, networks, and the Cloud. The system allows only authorized users to log in and will shut down any user who tries to do something if he or she lacks permission.New security standards are emerging to bring better security to every device on the smart network. The recently released ISO/IEC 18598, for example, governs the security of the physical elements of automated infrastructure management systems. AIM components include computers, computer rooms, sensors, devices, cables, and all other hardware.T he standard sets out a list of defined features AIM systems must have, said Hans-Jurgen Neithammer, who led the ISO/IEC 18598 project. He is an expert on data center architectures with CommScope, a New York-based firm that builds and manages communication networks.Under the new standard, AIM systems must know the location of all devices and cabling, and be able to identify and block viruses or intrusions at the level of those components. It must also monitor cable ports for unauthorized changes, even something as mundane as the accidental disconnection of a cable. When a critical circuit or element is removed, the system sends an alarm to a manager, Neithammer said. The new standard also mandates secure but interoperable interfaces for software from different vendors. The software interface is now defined, so no longer does a user have to rely on one vendor, Neithammer said. This plug-and-play capability will allow cities to integrate new devices and technologies into existing infrast ructure without having to worry about the compatibility of proprietary systems or equipment. That is the biggest advantage from the user side, Neithammer said.Interoperability is really important, agreed San Diegos Graham. It gives the city more flexibility in how it deploys future systems, and it also reduces cost, since it opens the door to greater competition.Yet smart cities will require significant investments that go well beyond the initial build. With digital infrastructure evolving so quickly, municipal officials will probably need to update software frequently to improve capabilities.Cities will also need new types of professionals to manage and interpret the data. San Diego, for example, has hired a chief data officer to coordinate the integration of its smart infrastructure with various city departments, and a data scientist to monitor artificial intelligence and other technologies that it may one day want to incorporate it into its system. When a city builds a road or a b ridge, it confidently expects it to last for 50 years or more. That is not the case with digital infrastructure.Cities will also have to rethink what they know about utility service lifecycles. When a city builds a road or a bridge, it confidently expects it to last for 50 years or more. That is not the case with digital infrastructure.Everyone needs to understand the lifecycle, Thompson said. Theres a three-to-five year lifecycle for communications systems. All of this requires significant investments, yet more and more cities seem willing to take the plunge. In many ways, they have no other choice. The buildout of a private digital infrastructure points the way toward even greater connectivity, and it is happening rapidly whether cities are leading the way or not.Everything is moving toward everything within cities being connected, Ashe said. In ten years or sooner, autonomous cars will be traveling on city streets and they need to know not only where they are going, but what is com ing at them and what is around the corner. Drones will be flying overhead. People will have wearable devices constantly communicating.Cities must learn to master those flows of traffic, energy, and information to create a smarter city that makes life better for those who are connected and those who are not. Either that, or they will descend into digitaland perhaps physicalchaos as independent smart devices create their own ad hoc networks and fight for their own piece of turf.It is too soon to tell how this will all work out. Yet one thing is certain Smart city technology is moving so fast, it has no time to wait for a mock city in the desert. It is happening now.Readthe latest issue of theMechanical Engineering Magazine.

When girls see female superheroes, they are more likely to feel confidentWhen girls see female superheroes, they are more likely to feel confidentWhen young girls watch superhero Wonder Woman fight off villains and seek out justice in a movie, they may be following more than an entertaining plot - they may be internalizing lessons for their future, a new study by the Womens Media Center andBBC America suggests. The research is a reminder of the importance of being represented on screen, suggesting that female superheroes help young girls feel more confident and brave. If you cant see her, you cant be her, BBC America President Sarah Barnett said in a statement. Its time to expand what gets seen.Female superheroes superpower confidence of girlsIn its survey of over 2,000 participants ages 10-19, the report found a confidence eu-agrarpolitik existed between genders. Young women ages 15 to 19 were significantly less likely to describe themselves as confident, brave, and heard, compared t o teenaged boys. More than half of young adult women said that they were not listened to, compared to 38 % of teenaged boys who felt the same. But having a female role model, even if the hero was fictional, made a difference.Girls in the survey said their favorite female superheroes and science fiction characters helped them identify as strong, brave, confident and motivated. They left a more lasting positive impact than a male superhero did. Girls were more likely to think female superheroes were more powerful and smarter, than a male action figure. From Wonder Woman to the character Storm Reid from A Wrinkle in Time, there are more female heroes going onscreen for young women to look up to, but there is still much work to be done. The majority ofgirls and young women surveyed said there were not enough female role models, strong female characters or relatable female characters.

Outreach Events at the University of Kentucky Inspire and Empower Next Generation of Engineers

Outreach Events at the University of Kentucky Inspire and Empower Next Generation of Engineers Outreach Events at the University of Kentucky Inspire and Empower Next Generation of Engineers Outreach Events at the University of Kentucky Inspire and Empower Next Generation of Engineersby Alaina G. LevinePublished July 2016Luke Long, a senior in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Kentucky (UK), welches looking for an opportunity to give back to his community. A leader in his ASME section and an avid volunteer, particularly with English as a Second Language (ESL) students, Long envisioned an engineering-themed auffhrung that would educate, inspire and empower kids to pursue technical careers. Thanks to an ASME Diversity Action Grant, Long welches able to not only make his own dream come true, but also to find a way for youngsters to identify and achieve their own dreams. The ensuing outreach project was simply entitled the UK ASME Spring Celebration, and involved cooperation betw een the UK chapters of ASME, Engineers Without Borders (EWB), the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). Together the united team partnered closely with the UK College of Engineering and Newtons Attic, a local science outreach organization, as well as 2 local school districts. The project consisted of two stages, each with the same goal of promoting diversity and participation with the UK ASME student chapter and the engineering profession as a whole. The first stage involved bringing students in grades 8-12 from the school districts to the nearby Newtons Attic unigelnde. Various exciting, engineering and science-oriented activities were held for the students enjoyment, says Long. Lunch was sponsored by outside organizations, with whom the team had built alliances. The fest at the nonprofit Newtons Attic consisted of an entire English as a Second Language (ESL) program from a high school in the local school district, including many refuge e children that have been in the city less than five years. The second stage of the project took place on campus in February (2016). The team held an interactive event the day before the University of Kentuckys E-Day, which is a public affair executed by the UK College of Engineering. Newtons Attic provided learning and demonstration resources, and the UK ASME section offered various hands-on activities designed to teach and reinforce engineering principles. The kids also heard presentations highlighting engineering discovery and innovation, science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) professions, and the unique organizations sponsoring the event. It was a fun, carnival-style event promoting engineering and diversity, says Long. Specific pieces included exciting competitions and talks given by students from different engineering disciplines. And perhaps the best part of the day was that the kids got a chance to learn about majors, careers, research, and scholarships offered by a nd available at the UK College of Engineering. At the conclusion of the day, there was another engaging workshop once more reiterating the importance of diversity in engineering, especially at the University of Kentucky.By all accounts the project was a complete triumph. Eighty-four (84) kids ended up participating. At the on-campus event in February, several kids immediately caught the engineering bug and ended up returning the following day for E-Day. One especially poignant measure of success was realized when some of the high school students and their teacher, who had been chaperoning the trip, expressed a strong desire to facilitate the launch of a chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) at UK, to meet the needs of the underrepresented minority population of kids who may become future Kentucky Wildcats. We said we want to make this organization active and youll have that support, says Long. We wanted to make sure that these proactive students knew the o pportunities that are going to be available to them on campus.Engineering students have demanding agendas, often combining full course loads with projects, research, internship, and leadership experiences (in ASME and other organizations). But add to that the task of producing a series of outreach events and you get an opportunity to showcase your coordination and time management talents. For engineers with busy schedules it was a challenge, admits Long, but we got it done.High school students and a volunteer (left) pose in front of the Ballista pumpkin launcher on University of Kentuckys campus. The key to success was synchronization between all players. The team, consisting of several members from each club, needed to stay in constant communications with the highest level of UK administration, says Long, given their presence on campus, and the nature of the collaboration they had crafted with external partners in the school districts and Newtons Attic. While they planned and prepare d for as many contingencies as they could, it was a living event, says Long. We didnt have the final schauplatz and date nailed down until a few days before we went live. Part of the challenge in confirming the details was associated with the ambitious nature of some of the outreach activities. The team wanted to bring with them and demonstrate a ballista, a catapult they planned to use to project pumpkins across the quad. You cant just bring this on campus, he says with a laugh. Theres risk and liability. He and his peers spoke with many different university divisions to obtain permission and negotiate the logistics of such a launch device. UKs Parking and Transportation Department finally agreed to let them use a parking lot for their exhibition. The volunteers were very wise and level-headed, he says. All activities were pretty safe but theres always risk. We did a lot of thinking on our feet. Everybody had to know the plan. But I was impressed with the crew.On the day of the eve nt, the students encountered another unforeseen test, which they handled like pros. Although they had given clear instructions to the schools as to where the buses filled with children should park on campus, the bus drivers made a critical mistake and instead accessed an area of the university that is restricted. And to add insult to injury, university protocol wasnt followed and the buses were able to drive right past gates that were supposed to be securing the perimeter. We had to move quickly, and fix the communications, says Long. We had to make sure no one at the university was alarmed that there were school buses in this area. I had a contact with Parking and Transportation at UK, and I called one of the top managers there and asked if he could help me troubleshoot this. Thanks to their quick-thinking and resourcefulness, they were able to direct the buses out of the restricted lot and into the pre-arranged location for parking, before any campus alarm bells were sounded. Long emerged from the entire experience a stronger, more confident leader. The unique lesson for me as chair of the committee was trusting the leadership of the other clubs, he says. I generally like to have things under control. But theres no way a single person can do this. But at the very beginning I said to the other students I trust you and let them take control. This was a lesson for me to give that trust and not just steamrolling it and taking it all by myself. Moreover, because he and his fellow ASME members were working with other clubs on campus, they had a unique opportunity to network and even develop personal relationships with students in other majors with whom they might not have otherwise had the chance to engage. I learned that volunteering in stuff like this can result in really cool long term connections and friendships, he affirms.Interfacing with the kids was also priceless, for both Long and his group. On event day, I saw my volunteers and team walk in really stres sed and at the end of the day walk out with smiles on their faces, he notes. They had a blast working with the kids, and sharing their own stories with them. This had a big impact on me Long, who has volunteered in (ESL) programs for several years, was especially appreciative of the fact that many of the kids who participated were new to the US. I love ESL, so for me it was very special to see so many ESL students show up, he says. Most of them were refugees from other countries. So on a personal note, to see them interacting in this environment, learning and improving their English skills, learning the physics of building projects, and in some cases, getting their first exposure to coding or engineering, was very meaningful. I saw a lot of smiles.

Why quitters always win and losers never quit

Why quitters always win and losers never quitWhy quitters always win and losers never quitQuitters never win and winners never quit. These are the infamous words of legendary NFL coach, Vincent Lombardi, considered by many to be one the greatest coaches in American sport history.Almost half a century after his death, Lombardis words are still a good representation of what we believe about success today - that winners never give up and losers always quit. But, what if our beliefs about success are backwards? What if quitting could improve the odds of success and grit or perseverance could leave us worse off?The art of not losing moneyIn the business of trading, roughly 90% of day traders lose their money, whilst the remaining 10% make obscene amounts of money. 1Were talking hundreds of millions of dollars a year lost by the losers and gained by the winners. At some point in the 1980s, Jack Schwager, a renowned expert in futures trading (the buying and selling of an item in the future, ba sed on an agreed price today), began his search for answers to what separates the winning traders from the losing pack.To solve this mystery, over the next twenty years or so, Schwager researched and interviewed the most successful traders of our time - including traders who had amassed billions of dollars, averaged 30 percent returns on their money each year for up to twenty-one years and grew thirty thousand dollars into eighty million dollars. After putting togetzu sich his findings, Schwager discovered a common trait - aside from skill level - shared by the top traders.A common trait that provides some insight into a habit shared by highly successful people across all fields. The cost of get-there-itisOn one hazy, dark night in July of 1999, John F.Kennedy Jr.- the son of President John F.Kennedy - piloted the take off of a flight, en-route to Marthas Vineyard for the wedding of his cousin, Rory Kennedy. As Kennedy navigated the aircraft along the Connecticut coastline and over Rhode Island Sound, a sudden haze and darkness clouded his vision.Kennedy was disoriented, he could no longer see what direction the tuch was flying towards. And then, in a random series of maneuvers, he swiveled the plane to the right and the left, upwards, then downwards - all at varying speeds.A few miles from his final destination, Kennedy lost control of the plane. Moments later, it crashed into the Atlantic Ocean.A couple of days afterwards, a rescue team of divers recovered the dead bodies of Kennedy and the passengers - his wife and sister-in-law.Since the tragic death of John F.Kennedy Jr, there have been several investigations into the possible causes of the plane crash. Some point the finger at the poor flight visibility caused by the hazy, dark weather condition. Others point to his inexperience of flying a plane in nighttime conditions.According to Dr. Douglas Lonnstrom, Siena College professor and experienced pilot, there is one standout possible cause - its called get-there-itis. 2Get-there-itis - a common word used and sometimes joked about by pilots - is the determination of a pilot to reach a destination, even when flying in conditions that are very dangerous.Lonnstrom alongside a good handful of experienced pilots suggest that Kennedy had been blinded by Get-there-itis on the day of the plane crash.Prior to takeoff, Kennedy had promised both his sister, Caroline, who was vacationing in Idaho with her family and his wife, Carolyn, that he would arrive at Marthas Vineyard that night and attend the wedding.Kennedy was determined to fulfill these promises and fly to the destination, despite two other pilots cancelling their flights due to the bad weather conditions. In the end, Kennedys Get-there-itis cost not only his life, but also the lives of his loved ones.If Kennedy had quit the flight plans, instead of persevering to reach his destination, three lives would have been saved on that day.Cutting your losses to win bigJust like Kennedys d etermination to reach his destination, despite bad weather conditions, get-there-itis could also blind us in persevering towards achieving a goal, even when the costs outweigh the benefits.Aheadstrong determination to persist with a bad business idea, job, relationship, friendship and so on, could cost us much of our money, energy, health and time, which we can never get back.Once a significant amount of time, money and energy has been invested towards a goal, it becomes mora difficult to quit, even though sticking to the goal could cost us as much, if not much more than what weve lost already. 3Winners avoid get-there-itis and pick the right moment to give up on a goal.In the world of trading,Schwager discovered that the common habit shared by the top traders was the ability to Cut your losses and let your profits run. sourceMarket Wizards Interviews with Top Traders(Audiobook)In the world of entrepreneurship, some of the most profitable businesses have been built, after the entrep reneur had quit on another idea and cut their losses. For example, the social media platform, Twitter, was apivotidea, built after the founders abandoned their podcasting company, Odeo.Other examples include YouTube, originally a dating site, eBay, originally a platform for selling PEZ dispensers and Google, which began as library book search engine. In the world of science, some of the most innovative inventions have been the sequel to a series of abandoned ideas and experiments. For example, Sir Alexander Fleming abandoned his search for a drug to cure diseases to later discover the powerful antibiotic, penicillin. What if these people refused to quit on their initial goals? What would the world look like today? In the book,The DipA Little Book That Teaches You When to Quit (and When to Stick) (audiobook),entrepreneur, Seth Godin, makes a strong case that winners quit all the time - they just quit the right stuff at the right time.Winners quit on different things in their life, to cre ate more time and energy todevote towards something more importantand rewarding to them.Quitting also has health benefits.According to psychologists Wrosch and Miller, goal disengagement- that is, giving up on our goals - could also improve overall well-being.During their one year-long study, which involved tracking the effects of goal setting on 90 teenagers, the psychologists discovered that the participants who refused to quit on unattainable goals experienced higher levels of inflammatory molecule C-reactive protein - a protein linked with heart disease and diabetes. 4Winners cut their losses to win big in life.Quitting like a winnerSome goals are worth sticking with and some arent.Sometimes, we have to let go of a business, friendship, relationship, job or idea, to make room for a better one - or in extreme situations, to choose life over death.Winners quit strategically. Theyre not afraid to quit, especiallywhen the costs of sticking with a goal outweigh the benefits of pu rsuing a different one.Meanwhile, just like a fighting army that has already been defeated in warfare, losers keep persevering, instead of retreating and waving a white flag of surrender. In the end, quitters will always win and losers will never quit.Mayo Oshin writes atMayoOshin.com, where he shares practical self-improvement ideas and proven science for better health, productivity and creativity. To get practical ideas on how to stop procrastinating and build healthy habits, you can join his free weekly newsletterhere.A version of thisarticleoriginally appeared atmayooshin.comas The Upside of Quitting Why Quitters Always Win and Losers Never Quit.FootnotesThe actual percentage of traders who lose money varies depending on the source of information. Some sources suggest 95% or more lose money on average.Dr. Douglas Lonnstrom. JFK Jr. - 10 Years after the Crash, a Pilots Perspective. This is also known as the sunk cost fallacy. The more we emotionally invest into something, the harde r it becomes to abandon it.Miller, Gregory E., and Carsten Wrosch. Youve Gotta Know When to Fold Em Goal Disengagement and Systemic Inflammation in Adolescence. Psychological Science 18, no. 9 (2007) 77377.Grit also plays an important role in success. The argument here is that quitting the right goals and the right time, will create more time and energy to pursue better goals.

Girl Scouts Learn Engineering

Girl Scouts Learn Engineering Girl Scouts Learn Engineering Girl Scouts Learn Engineering ASME members and the Girl Scouts held a unique event at MIT on Saturday August 1 for twenty five Girl Scouts, aged 9-11. Dressed in their green uniforms with sashes full of badges, the girls became engineers for an afternoon and faced a challenge: package a potato chip for shipping so it doesnt break. The girls were given a potato chip which was painted with food coloring to look like a butterfly. Next, forming teams of two, they began experimenting with bubble wrap, sticks, straws, paper clips, masking tape, scissors, sketching paper, and a ruler to engineer the best package for their butterfly potato chip. The STEM workshop, Dream, Design, Create: Explore the World of Mechanical Engineering, also involved several ASME members and a dozen parents and scout leaders. The competition began. There was a lot of talking between the girls about how to solve the problem. Marcelle said, I want to learn about things that I never did before. I like to do chemistry, mixing stuff. Building a contraption not to break the potato chip is going to be hard. And her partner Jahnia added, I wanted to test out some new things I havent done before. I want to be an engineer to make my own things, build something with my hands. Using the materials, the girls began tackling the challenge. Some sketched out their designs; others tried building their prototype one straw, stick and piece of bubble wrap at a time. As the clock ticked down, the girls designs emerged - all looking very different with pieces of bubble wrap going in every direction to protect the precious potato chip. Scouts wait to see if their potato chip will be crushed, or not. Then came the real test- could all their hard work and ingenuity help the chip survive when a book was dropped on it? One by one, each team eagerly brought their uniquely wrapped chip to the table and the anticipation built. As the scout leader held the heavy book above the prototype, everyone held their breath. Down came the book crashing on the package! Each team then rushed to unwrap theirs, but each time, the chip had been shattered. Charlotte de Vries, ASME member and assistant professor at Penn State University Erie, encouraged the girls not to be discouraged. We learned a lot today. We learned maybe we need more tape or bubble wrap and maybe we need more time to build our package. Sometimes it doesnt work and you have to do it again, again and again- thats part of being an engineer. The team of Kaleigh and Tanya didnt lose their enthusiasm. I already went to something like this before and it was really cool. I might want to be an engineer when I grow up because I like creating things. Working with more than one person is easiest because it helps you figure out which design is better, said Kaleigh. Tanya added, Its almost impossible not to break a chip in this project. I like things like 3D printing and egg drops and I think its a lot of fun. My dad is engineer at GE. The next experiment was the Lets get energized project. Again, acting like engineers, they had to determine which kind of insulation would conserve the most energy and keep their house warmest in the winter. The materials this time were pieces of polyester, aluminum foil, a cotton t-shirt, newspaper, bubble wrap and a wool sock. The girls used all of these materials to wrap up their plastic cup in a way that would provide the best insulation. The ASME members then poured hot boiling water into each of the scouts insulated cups and inserted a thermometer. The girls were instructed to come up with a hypothesis - which material will be the best insulator? They took the first temperature, recorded it and then after approximately 10 minutes, they took the temperature again to see how much energy was lost based on how they insulated their cup. Kerri Constant, Associate Director of curriculum alignment with the Girl Scout Council of eastern Massachusetts, pointed out, Today is a great platform with female mentors in the field. Girls love to solve problems- its a key thing for them and once they get involved, they love it. It helps them with their aspirations. This is a perfect time for them discovering who they are. Constant said she was pleased to see 30 girls active in the summer as the Girl Scouts has a very vibrant STEM and engineering portfolio. In their community based after school program, the 8 week program on engineering and design that reaches 2500 girls. And in March and April, the Girl Scouts holds a STEM conference for girls in middle and high school. Id love to partner with ASME more on this type of program. Its very important for these young girls to have female engineers as role models and to see engineers who are local and in their community. Its not just about the math and science, but how they can make a difference in their community. It helps break the stereotype, and they see women who have similar interests. The format of the afternoon event was to teach basic concepts that focus on the fundamentals of mechanical engineering thru hands-on activities. The goal was to help the young girls understand that mechanical engineering is fun and its something they can do. Today is about getting girls excited about engineering at a young age, and showing them that its an option for them as an area of study and/or career. The girls that are here signed up because they wanted to learn more about mechanical engineering. They seem really excited and engaged in the activities and topics we planned. They have natural drawing and building skills, and could be great engineers one day, said Kate Fu, ASME member and Assistant Professor of ME and Industrial design at Georgia Tech. ASME member Kathy Jacobson, a retired Lockheed Martin engineer was a Girl Scouts leader for years. I saw that there werent any engineering badges for the girls, so we found several interested ASME members who shared our vision and started a process to investigate getting some engineering badge content. The team met via Skype over the last few months as theyre all from different parts of the country. They looked at the age appropriateness of activities to make it so the girls would get the most out of the workshops. They wanted to make it fun, interesting and hands-on so the girls would walk away saying I want to be an engineer. One of my favorite things at this workshop was when I gave the first girl a paper, she immediately asked can I make a paper airplane? Thats the sign of a future engineer! Even if the girls here do not go on the path towards engineering, its great to see them excited at this workshop, said de Vries. For Further Discussion Today is about getting girls excited about engineering at a young age, and showing them that it̢۪s an option for them as an area of study and/or career.Prof. Kate Fu, Georgia Tech

DEA Agent Career and Job Functions

DEA Agent Career and Job Functions DEA Agent Career and Job Functions Illegal and illicit drug use is a problem that touches nearly every aspect of society.  The drug trade has been tied to terrorism, as well as to all sorts of other illegal and harmful behaviors  across the world. The  Drug Enforcement Agency was  created as part of the  Department of Justice to combat the effects of drug trafficking in the U.S. If you want  to work toward eradicating the illegal sale and use of drugs  and associated criminal activities, you  might  want to consider a career as a DEA special agent. Job Functions and the Work Environment of DEA Special Agents DEA agents have a unique and special role in law enforcement.  Theyre  assigned to investigate every facet of the  illegal drug industry, so they  may be sent to work anywhere in the country or even the world, including assignments to remote and perhaps even undesirable locations. DEA special agents work closely with state and local law enforcement agencies, as well as fellow federal law enforcement associates. They help  to coordinate investigations and enforcement efforts. Drug enforcement agents are just as likely to work behind the scenes in support of local efforts as they are to take the lead in enforcing federal drug policy. The job of a drug enforcement agent often includes: Conducting surveillanceReport writingPreparing and obtaining search and arrest warrantsCoordinating federal, state and local drug enforcement effortsParticipating in undercover operationsTracking and arresting suspected criminalsProviding courtroom testimonyHandling weapons, drugs and large sums of moneyConducting and coordinating investigations A career as a DEA agent comes with  some special risks, chiefly in the area  of undercover work.  Undercover agents may be tasked with transporting large amounts of illegal drugs or money.  They rarely  carry law enforcement credentials because of the danger of  being discovered. They may be subject to arrest by local law enforcement officers who are unaware of their activities, in addition to  risks posed by interacting with  the criminal element. Education and Skill Requirements for DEA Agents Being  hired as a DEA agent can be a  competitive challenge.  Candidates must be at least 21 years old and younger than 37 at the time of appointment. The DEA has some  strict hiring standards. A rigorous background investigation  includes  a polygraph exam and psychological screening.  Candidates must also undergo a physical abilities test to ensure that theyre  physically capable of performing the job. According to the agency, the most competitive candidates will have  at least a four-year degree in criminal justice or a related program such as police science or criminology. Preferably, they will hold a masters degree in criminal justice or criminology. Most also have previous experience in law enforcement and many have military backgrounds.   Fluency in a foreign language is a major plus, especially Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese or Nigerian.  Skills in computer science, finance, and accounting, economics, and engineering  are also a plus. Prospective agents undergo an intensive 18-week training program at the DEA Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia after theyre hired.  Agents  receive their first duty assignment  during this training.  Candidates must agree to be assigned anywhere the agency requires them to go as a condition of employment. Job Growth and Salary Outlook for Drug Enforcement Special Agents Drug enforcement is an ongoing issue that requires constant attention, so  the landscape of federal drug policy is constantly changing. This means new challenges and new opportunities may be on the horizon for agents at any time.  It also means that  a need for drug enforcement agents will continue. As with most federal law enforcement jobs, the DEA conducts periodic hiring campaigns.  Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact their nearest DEA recruiting office to stay up to date with employment opportunities within the agency. First-year agents can expect to earn a base salary of between $33,477  and $53,234 as of 2016,  depending on the location of their first assignment and the nature of their past experience. They can earn  from $37,309 to  $41,612 during their training period. Theyre  also eligible for law enforcement availability pay (LEAP), which can earn them  more each year.  DEA agents may become eligible for promotions  and  salaries  of more than $90,000 a  year after four years of service. Is a Career As a DEA Agent Right for You? The Drug Enforcement Agency provides unique perspectives and challenges for  law enforcement agents. If you feel strongly about curtailing illegal drug trafficking and you dont mind getting your hands dirty, you may find that a job as a DEA agent may just be the perfect criminology career for you.

How imaginary deadlines can boost productivity

How imaginary deadlines can boost productivity How imaginary deadlines can boost productivity Do you tend to procrastinate and cut your timing too close to your deadlines? Whether you’re a job seeker, employee, freelancer, or entrepreneur, you’re likely used to working toward deadlines that are set by a hiring manager, employer, or client. But sometimes waiting to start a project based on when it is actually due can cause you to procrastinate. If this is the case, you might benefit from a different approach to time management: creating “imaginary deadlines.” An imaginary or internal deadline is simply an intermediary step you can use to: Put power back into your hands about your work process Give yourself a sense of having more time to reach your goals Help you reach your due dates with less last-minute stress Power a productivity boost by building in a cushion for your momentum By setting an internal deadline that you work toward independent of your real deadline imposed by a boss or client, you can kickstart your creative juices and avoid “11th-hour” scrambling to complete your deliverables. Follow the steps below to learn how to effectively set imaginary deadlines no matter what your line of work is. Work backwardsSetting an imaginary deadline isn’t rocket science- it just takes commitment and a calendar. There’s no magic formula for selecting an internal deadline; the key is to pick a date that’s far enough ahead of your drop-dead deadline to give you a comfortable cushion for any unexpected challenges that may arise.A good rule of thumb in setting your internal deadline when you have an actual deadline of two weeks is to work backwards one week from your real deadline and see what happens. Pretend as you work that you really, honestly, no-matter-what must get everything completed not in two weeks, but in a single week. If it ends up difficult or impossible to complete the full workload in that time, at least you will be a week ahead of where you would have been if you’d waited to start later in the process- and you’ll still have a week left for completion.Harness the energy of “just starting”Anyone who struggles to get out the door to exercise- but ultimately triu mphs in this task- knows the power of beginning. Once you take that first step to walk, run, or bike down the road, momentum kicks in and you wonder what took so long to get you started. When it comes to working out, getting out the door is half the battle. So too with your work projects- once you make that initial move to commence the task, one action leads to the next. Before you know it, you’ve created energy that develops a life of its own, leading you to do what needs to be completed next and powering your productivity. By setting an imaginary deadline, you enable yourself to benefit earlier from the power of getting started, and you give yourself a longer runway to get more done once you’ve cleared that first hurdle.Make it easier for yourselfIf “just getting started” is easier said than done for you, then you may need to do a few things on the front end to grease the wheels for this to happen. Just as runners can improve their chances of actually getting out the door f or their morning run by selecting their workout clothes and shoes the night before, you as a worker can kickstart your motivation and creative juices with some preparation.Gather all of the materials you’ll need for the project before you start working in earnest on it, whether that’s requesting files from a client, asking your supervisor for initial guidance on a preliminary question, or simply organizing your thoughts around what needs to be done. By starting to sort out these items in advance of the real work beginning, you’ll be familiarizing yourself with the task, making it much easier to dive in when you’re ready.Job seekers: give up “cram preparation”Searching for work brings its own set of sometimes difficult time pressures, so imaginary deadlines can really help you organize your job search. For example, if you have an interview scheduled in a week’s time and your usual style is to use “cram preparation” the night before, researching the company and pract icing your responses to potential hiring-team questions, why not push up your process by three days and get things done ahead of your usual schedule? That way, you’ll have more time during the week to rehearse your answers if needed, and you can use the night before the interview to rest up and review logistics for arriving at your meeting on time. You may be thinking, “But I always manage to reach my actual deadlines even if I’m panicked before I do it!” Even if you ultimately meet your cut-off date by pulling an all-nighter and submitting your project under the wire moments before it’s due, powered by a rush of adrenaline, this isn’t a healthy way to work long-term, and can cause you to feel resentful and burnt out over time- a clear productivity killer. Using the tactic of imaginary-deadline setting can help you reach the finish line in a way that’s much more graceful, sustainable, and ultimately productive. This article was originally published on FlexJobs.com.

The 3 Best Industries for Career Changers

The 3 Best Industries for Career Changers The 3 Best Industries for Career Changers The 3 Best Industries for Career Changers If you're looking for a job, you've probably come to realize that it's a jungle out there with a lot of job seekers chasing too few job openings. People who have worked in stressed industries, such as finance or newspaper publishing, have found it especially rough since the recession has erased many jobs. For most of us, career planning takes us only as far as the next job. Few people have a formal plan for what they might want to do in, say, five or 10 years. But taking a longer view might not be a bad idea, especially if you have plenty of years left before you retire. There might not be a perfect industry to be in right now, but when the economy turns around, some industries will recover more quickly and easily than others. If you're considering a career change, think about opportunities in these three industries, which are all expected to see job growth in the coming decade. HEALTH CARE Aging Baby Boomers (people born between 1946 and 1964) will be placing more demand on the nation's health care system for at least the next two decades. That's a big reason the federal government foresees about 3 million new jobs in the health care industry from 2008 through 2016. The need for nurses and physical therapists will be especially great, as will the need for medical records specialists and health information technicians, as the industry uses more technology for billing and service delivery. CONSTRUCTION As goes the economy, so goes the construction industry. When the economy begins to turn around and businesses are again able to borrow money for development, the construction industry will benefit. Also, the growing emphasis on going green will call for more environmentally-friendly design, which will increase demand for environmental engineers, scientists, and other specialists. Then, of course, builders will want to hire more people to build the structures. Altogether, the government sees an increase of about 3 million jobs in this industry through 2016. EDUCATION Much of the expected job growth will require education beyond high school. That means colleges, universities, and career institutes will need more people who can teach. The government sees a 23 percent growth in these roles through 2016. If you'd like to transition into a career in education, find out the required credentials for the teaching role you'd like to pursue, and acquire any additional training or certifications you'll need. Have you moved into one of these industries after working in another? Tell us about your experience.

How to prevent a bad start to your day from getting in your way

How to prevent a bad start to your day from getting in your way How to prevent a bad start to your day from getting in your way There’s nothing like getting off on the wrong foot at the beginning of the day.  In fact, research has even found that witnessing rudeness in the morning will ruin the rest of the day, but confidence was found to help participants combat the effects of rudeness that played out. Here are four other ways to take a breather when you start work with a huge chip on your shoulder.Find a quiet spot to thinkGive yourself some alone, away from your chattering coworkers and manager’s demands. Instead of living on autopilot, this can help you process the morning you’ve had, even for a few minutes. Take a second to stop rushing around and see where your mind takes you. Whether it’s on a walk or over a cup of coffee, hit the pause button using mindfulness while you can. Also, think about  switching up your daily routine and working in a different setting for once.Focus on what you can control - not what you can’tDon’t waste time stressing out about things that you have no control over. This will only add more unnecessary fuel to a blazing fire.So settle in and stop taking responsibility for every negative thing that’s happened to you that day, and do what you have to in order to move forward. Throw yourself into your work. Listen to music or a podcast. Read your favorite weekly column.  Make yourself busy.  After all, life goes on. Why shouldn’t you?Practice gratitudeRough commute? Think about the fact that you didn’t have to make your train today, but you managed to anyway.Or the fact that your apartment’s air conditioning system isn’t broken in this crazy summer heat, or that you’re wearing your favorite outfit to work. Your list could probably go on and on.If you slow down for a moment, you’ll realize that even if your morning has been one of the worst you’ve had in a while, you ultimately still have a bunch of things to be thankful for.Think about those exciting plans on the horizonOn the worst days, it really pays to give  yourself something to actively look forward to.Are you going on vacation with family soon? Or meeting up with friends you haven’t seen in the longest time? Are you taking yourself to dinner, or going to a fun conference soon?Your plans don’t have to be extravagant - just positive - to potentially change your mood for the better.

The Power of Predictive Analytics in Staffing

Three Ways to List 3 Titles for 1 Employer

Three Ways to List 3 Titles for 1 Employer Three Ways to List 3 Titles for 1 Employer Three Ways to List 3 Titles for 1 Employer I recently came across a challenge while helping a friend update her resume. The bulk of her experience (10 years' worth) had been with one company, where she had progressed from sales associate to assistant manager to store manager. Talk about moving up the ladder! Her problem was that her experience didn't appear all that impressive on her resume, since it looked like she had just one job for 10 years, rather than three progressively more responsible jobs. Does this situation sound familiar? After some brainstorming andconsultation with my colleagues, we came up with a clear approach to address this on her resume. For story-telling purposes, here's an overview of her most recent work history: 2008-PresentTownville School District, Substitute Teacher 2006-2008Wee Care Daycare, School Age Teacher 1996-2006National Book Seller, Manager, Assistant Manager, Sales Associate And here are three different ways you can incorporate this multiple titles/one company scenario on your resume: 1) If you need to fill in some white space on your resume to make it reach a full page, then list them all as separate positions with bullets of accomplishments under each. Example: Manager, National Book Seller (2003-2006) Accomplishment or responsibility Accomplishment or responsibility Assistant Manager, National Book Seller (2002-2003) Accomplishment or responsibility Accomplishment or responsibility Sales Associate, National Book Seller (1996-2002) Accomplishment or responsibility Accomplishment or responsibility 2) If you have more experience to put on your resume besides that one company, list the individual job titles in chronological order (newest first). Then, add your relevant accomplishments and responsibilities from all the positions in one bullet list. Example: Manager, National Book Seller (2003-2006) Assistant Manager, National Book Seller (2002-2003) Sales Associate, National Book Seller (1996-2002) Accomplishment or responsibility Accomplishment or responsibility Accomplishment or responsibility Accomplishment or responsibility Accomplishment or responsibility Accomplishment or responsibility 3) Another space-saving approach is to list one company heading, showing your total time with the company, then also list the dates that apply to each position title. Since it's very similar to the second example, this alternative is a matter of style. Take into account how it looks on your resume when stacked up against everything else. Example: Nov. 1996 to Aug. 2006 National Book Seller, Somewhere, CT Manager (2003-2006) Assistant Manager (2002-2003) Sales Associate (1996-2002) Accomplishment or responsibility Accomplishment or responsibility Accomplishment or responsibility Accomplishment or responsibility Accomplishment or responsibility Accomplishment or responsibility If all of your experience has been with just one employer, turn to Rick Saia's post, How to Build a Resume after Many Years with 1 Employer, to get some more ideas about presenting your experience in its best light on your resume.
